Prioritizing the health and well-being of girls.jpg

Female Genital Mutilation

FGM is a procedure that alter and can cause injury to the female genital organs. This procedure is mostly performed for non-medical reasons and has NO health benefits for girls.

Often presented as a traditional practice, it exposes girls and women to various risks with implications such as problems urinating, cysts, infections or even complications during childbirth.

From a medical point of view, FGM has no health benefits and only harms girls and women. It will also interfere with the natural function of girls’ and women’s bodies.

At the same time, this practice does not have any foundation on religion beliefs.

FGM may lead to complications such as: - severe pain - excessive bleeding - fever - infection - urinary problems - injury and genital tissues swelling - death

To prioritize health within communities, social norms change initiatives must be encouraged, collectives of organizations and individuals must be built and efforts to end FGM must be increased by empowering medical personnel working locally with girls and women.
